What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words: rei, meaning universal, and ki, meaning life energy. This life energy is believed to flow through all living things, supporting balance and overall well-being.
When energy is flowing freely, the body and mind are better able to function in harmony. Stress, illness, or emotional challenges may disrupt this natural flow. Reiki is intended to support the body’s ability to restore balance by encouraging relaxation and energetic alignment.
How Does Reiki Work?
During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a conduit for energy, allowing it to flow to the recipient where it is most needed. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body in a series of positions that correspond to different areas and energy centers.
Reiki does not involve massage or physical manipulation, and you remain fully clothed throughout the session. The experience is often deeply calming and restorative.
Potential Benefits of Reiki
People seek Reiki for many reasons, including:
• Stress reduction and relaxation
• Emotional support and balance
• Relief from tension or discomfort
• Improved sleep
• Support during life transitions
• Overall wellness and self-care
While experiences vary, many people report feeling peaceful, grounded, and more centred after a session.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Reiki is commonly described as a deeply relaxing experience. Sensations may include:
• Warmth or gentle tingling
• A sense of calm or meditation-like relaxation
• Emotional release or clarity
• Feeling lighter or more at ease
• Sometimes it may feel like nothing at all, which is also completely normal
Some people even fall asleep during their session as the nervous system shifts into a more relaxed state.
Important Note
Reiki is considered a complementary wellness practice and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. It can be used alongside conventional healthcare to support relaxation, emotional well-being, and quality of life.
